Samsung teamed up with Naver to release a new AI chip that is 8 times more energy-efficient than NVIDIA H100
On December 26th, Samsung Electronics announced at the end of 2022 that it will collaborate with South Korean internet giant Naver to jointly invest in AI semiconductor solutions.
According to a report by South Korean media BusinessKorea, the two companies have made significant breakthroughs in the field of AI semiconductors, developing their first solution chip that is 8 times more energy-efficient than Nvidia's H100 product.
The semiconductor solution promoted by both parties, specifically targeting Naver's HyperCLOVA X large language model, has customized a field programmable logic gate array (FPGA) chip.
Naver stated that this chip uses LPDDR memory, which is eight times more energy efficient than Nvidia's AI GPU, but did not provide detailed information about the other details of the chip.
The focus of cooperation between the two companies is to use Samsung's advanced process technology, combined with high-tech memory solutions such as computing storage, memory processing (PIM), near memory processing (PNM), and computing fast link (CXL), and integrate Naver's strength in software and AI algorithms.
Jinman Han, Executive Vice President of Global Sales and Marketing for Samsung Electronics Memory, stated:Through collaboration with Naver, we will develop cutting-edge semiconductor solutions to address memory bottlenecks in large-scale artificial intelligence systems.
